| Having a baby changes everything. We all know this, and it becomes even more real when it happens to you. One thing I noticed that changed early on is my fashion. Whether you are on round the clock breastfeeding duty with an infant or schlepping around a toddler and all their gear, comfort is key. Right after the birth of my child, I wore mostly sweats and slippers every day. After all, I didn’t really need to look good for anyone, right? Then one day I woke up and realized that I did need to try to look good, not just for my husband, but for myself. I realized that taking a shower and doing my hair and makeup actually gave me more energy! And picking out an actual matching outfit was a bonus! It’s easy to get into a rut when you are barely leaving the house and your main activities have you entertaining a 6-month old..I found that once I forced myself to “get dressed” every day, it somehow gave me purpose. I was now prepared for an impromptu play date, trip to the grocery store, or lunch out.
Going from frumpy to finished with a baby in tow is surprisingly easier than you might think. Here are a few fashion tips. I found that simple pieces work best. You want to be pulled together and not look like you just rolled out of bed. My basic go-to outfit of late is this:
Leggings – Keep a few pairs in rotation. Don’t feel like you just need black leggings either – try brown or gray. I prefer longer leggings to wear with boots. H&M has some good ones right now and they are cheap - $12 or so. These ones by 3 Dots are also great.
Tank – I like longer fitted tanks like these ones from James Perse or C&C California.
- Long top or cardigan – You can get a lot of bang for your buck with jersey tops from H&M or Forever 21. Or try something like
this by Smitten.
- Knee-high boots – Shopbop.com is my go-to shopping site for boots. Right now I am loving these by Frye.
- Accessorize with a scarf and some fun earrings.
The best part about this outfit is that it is comfortable and versatile – swap the leggings for skinny denim for a lunch date. Add a fitted motorcycle jacket to meet girlfriends for drinks.
Remember, having a baby does not mean you have to lose your identity, just make some adjustments to help keep it. |
