How To Clean A Leather Handbag
Linea Pelle Dylan Zip Tote

Unfortunately, my current favorite handbag, a soft green leather Linea Pelle creation, the Dylan Zipper Tote to be exact, met the misfortune of a spilled cocktail. It was Friday night, a good friend & I went out to dinner and drinks with our husbands. Someone reached for a drink while I was setting my handbag down on the bar. The drink and bag collided and the drink won. Ok, so it was mine. Specifically, a French 75, my favorite champagne cocktail. If you've never tried it, here's the recipe. I highly suggest.

I digress...I was then left with dark stains over the front of the bag. Not cute at all. What to do? After a quick Google search, and a multitude of results, I decided to consult an expert. I took my beloved bag to the best leather cleaner in the city. To my dismay, he told me that handbags were done at the owners own risk, he could not guarantee that the bag would not come back discolored or worn in. He also said that in his industry handbags were considered 'throw-away' items to be used only for one season. WTF? I get it, but these bags aren't cheap. I subscribe to the theory of purchasing a fabulous bag, using it for a season, putting it away for the next, and then busting it out some other season in the future - it's vintage!

Leaving the store frustrated, with my screaming two-year old in tow, I decided I'd take matters into my own hands and figure out how to clean this bag. Once home, I put baby down for a nap and called Linea Pelle directly, asking them for advice. The very helpful customer service rep told me to try the following:

a) Wipe the bag with a clean, damp cloth

b) Mix 10 parts water with 1 part gentle dish soap and dap with wet cloth

She also suggested doing a search on The Purse Forum - have you been there? It's awesome!

So I did all three things. After consulting the purse forum, many people suggested a specific leather cleaner. I decided I was going to buy it. But in the meantime, I tried mixing h2o with detergent and guess what? It worked! The washed lambskin of the Linea Pelle bag is I guess, washable. It took out the champagne and lemon like a charm. I am going to treat the bag with leather protector to hopefully avoid anything like this again, but I am just thrilled that it worked!

PS: In my great sadness over the stained LP Dylan, I decided to buy another handbag to help get me through my depression. I got the Rebecca Minkoff Morning After Tye-Die Tote in Sunshine. Is that bad?

I read that the Coach Leather Cleaner is the best. I have tried it on some of my leathers, particularly white handbags which get so dirty from jeans. It seems to work well.

I am a big fan of French 75 cocktails!

Great tips! I have been using the 'gentle detergent' method for years now and it truly works on washed leathers. Always remember to test in an inconspicuous spot first.

These are good ideas! Any advice for white leather handbags? Dark washed denim sometimes transfers color.

Love the Rebecca Minkoff! I like the turquoise colored one as well. Can't decide between the two...

Cathy7 - Pond's cold cream works to remove denim wash stains from white & cream leather handbags. Try it with a soft clean cloth - dab the stain gently. Always test first. Good luck!

Great info. What was the cleaner recommended by folks on the Purse Forum? Curious minds want to know! :)
  Skinnypurse     1259 days ago
ChloeG, it was a leather cleaner from Wilson's Leather. I just checked the web site and it looks like they have a leather/suede protector and a leather lotion, but not a cleaner! They also have leather care wipes that they say help clean dirt off. I've not tried them though.

YEAH. it worked.I have gone to a lot of bag repair shop but they all said they can't repair the jean stain on leather fossil hangbag. But Finally I have tried the way from this website mixture of 10 times water and 1 time washing powder and wipe out gently on my bag. Now all of the jean stain are gone and the bag look as new as when I bought. Thanks a lot.

Great tips! Like you mentioned, its best to start with mild soap and water. This is safe to use on all bags, however a lot of cleaners can actually cause more harm than good so always do this step first! Contact the seller and see if they can offer any specific advise.. they may know something that works really well on your specific handbag! Ciao.

Leather handbags need special care because of the type of fabric they were made of. Some can be cleaned using a clean cloth with a gentle cleaner while there are those that require special leather cleaning agents. It is always best to follow the cleaning instructions of the fabric to avoid damaging it.

That sounds like a great alternative to do. I suppose the effectiveness of certain cleaning tricks depends on the type of leather. Thanks for sharing! Congratulations on being able to clean the bag and getting a new one!

Can anybody help? I have hermes lindy rose jaipur with clemence leather. And it seems that my black silk dress has transferred the black color to the lindy. Should I use cream soap for leather or try to use powder detergent to clean the bag? Thanks a lot.
